As experts in the childcare sector we work exclusively with specialist care and education insurer Ecclesiastical to deliver our market-leading insurance product, Pound Gates Nursery Insurance.
As leading insurers in the education sector Ecclesiastical regularly carries out research to understand the opportunities and challenges faced in the sector, and cyber crime was identified as a key topic for 2018. As a result of its research Ecclesiastical has put together some information (click here) to help all businesses in the education sector, including nurseries, to protect themselves from cyber threats.
So what steps should you be taking to protect your business?
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have issued the following guidelines to help reduce the cyber threat and the impact that a cyber event could have:
- Back up your data, consider cloud storage;
- Install anti-malware software, maintain firewalls and regular patching;
- Keep your smartphones and tablets safe with passwords;
- Use passwords to protect your data and consider password managers;
- Avoid phishing attacks through adequate staff training and money transfer controls.
If you need to further improve your cyber security you can also seek certification under the Government’s Cyber Essentials scheme, which has the benefit of demonstrating to your customers (or prospective customers) that you take the protection of their data seriously. See www.cyberessentials.ncsc.gov.uk for more details).
You can’t completely eliminate the threat of a cyber attack, but you can mitigate it by taking effective precautions. The answer should include a blended approach that includes staff training, supported security policies, malware protection and cyber insurance. Cyber insurance is not the sole solution, but it should form part of a holistic solution that will help reduce the impact on the business should you suffer a cyber attack or breach by providing financial support and access to specialist support.
